Morning exercises

One day I was thinking about why there are so many people experiencing degradation of their professional skills? Have you meet such situations "use to take me seconds to find out, but now..." And people blame aging, environment, etc., etc., etc... and I think they are right! Simply as our muscles loses strength if we don't exercise, brain also loses an ability to work if we don't exercise it! So...

Would you like to have a little quiz? :)

One navvy digs a hole in 2 hours. Second one needs 3 hours to dig same size hole. Third guy needs 6 hours to complete that work. How much time do they need to dig same size hole working altogether?

Thanks for the exercise! My answer is 1 hour. The dig velocity of the workers is 1/2, 1/3 and 1/6. The resulting velocity is the sume 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6 = 1 hole per hour. It means the work will be done in one hour ;-)

The answer is right. Now your turn to propose an exercise. Wink

This is a great thinking exercise, however we put it to the test and here is the actuality of the exercise:

It actully took 3.7 team hours or 11.1 manhours to complete the dig.

Hi Johnnie,

What do you mean by the actuality? You are joking, right? :)

Vitaliy

actualitiy, I mean I have guys that dig the same size holes 3'X 3'X2'every day for meter placements. the worst case guy digs this hole in approx. 6 hours the best place guys digs this hole in approx: 2 hours. This morning I had 3 guys

try to dig this hole and it took them 3.5 team hours.  I am very open to any and all discussions that can prove my estimation wrong, however this was done this morning wiith real workers doing real work.  I estimate and manage this work daily. I understand that I am new to the PMP world, so if there is anyone out there that can show me a better way. I am wide open to everthing.

Johnnie

Johnnie,

I understand share your willingness to add some fun to the study. However, think about it, if one guy is digging the hole for you in 2 hours, why in a world you shall pay to 3 guys to dig the same hole in 3.5 hours? Stick with that best performer for 2 hours, and be happy.

You are the project manager, and your role is to propose best possible solution to finish the project on time and on budget with the acceptable quality. So…

This is not an attempt to bring "fun" into the study but real life estimating skills. the answer of one hour is not correct. there is no linear reduction for this task therefore the task cannot be done in that timeframe.

As a project manager, I would most definatly use the proper resources to complete the task and as a professional I would use the proper estimating times to complete the task and stay profitable.

respectfully,

Johnnie

Isn't real life fun when you know what your are doing and how things work?

Good luck!
